Project: Visual reconstruction of De Ceremoniis (Περὶ βασιλείου τάξεως)

This project explores the visual reconstruction of Byzantine rituals and ceremonial practices based on De Ceremoniis. By translating textual descriptions into visual representations, it aims to deepen the understanding of Byzantine court culture and provide historical foundations for the world-building of my comic.

The first chapter I chose to work is Book I, Chapter 43: The Investiture of a Caesar. 

Το παρόν έργο εξετάζει την οπτική ανασύνθεση των βυζαντινών τελετουργιών και των τελετουργικών πρακτικών, βασισμένη στο έργο De Ceremoniis. Μέσω της μετατροπής των γραπτών περιγραφών σε οπτικές αναπαραστάσεις, το έργο αυτό αποσκοπεί στην καλύτερη κατανόηση της βυζαντινής αυλικής κουλτούρας και στην παροχή ιστορικής βάσης για το world-building του κόμικ μου.

Το πρώτο κεφάλαιο που επέλεξα είναι το Βιβλίο I, Κεφάλαιο 43: Η απονομή του τίτλου του Καίσαρα.

Annotation:

1. Portrait of Constantine VII is based on Wing of ivory triptych with St Constantine, Dumbarton Oaks Collection.

2. Different tagmata are represented among the troops in this picture, so different military insignias were used — one has the Chi Rho symbol and another depecting a military saint.
